What started off as a routine run through Tartarus morphed into something else entirely within minutes; the team was ambushed by a group of shadows, ones that dealt massive damage with no hope of coming back from. Yukari had done her best to hold her own firing arrows into the ones advancing nearest to her, but...it didn’t seem to be doing anything to the enemy. The shadows were too strong, and that realization brought fear bubbling in the pit of her stomach.[break][break]
It wasn’t until she heard Fuuka scream out that she even realized one of the shadows had broken away from the rest, landing a direct hit on their leader and sending them flying back against the wall with a horrifying ‘crack’! Panic tried to root the brunette in place but she pushed it aside, rapidly firing arrows into the shadows to offer some sort of cover for her team. They barely managed to escape with their lives, but none of them were focused on that in the moment. All the way through Tartarus, even when they slammed through the double doors of the hospital, everyone’s attention was on their leader, who was still lifeless in her teammate’s arms.
The flashing monitors hurt Yukari’s puffy, swollen eyes every time she looked up to check on their status, the heartbeat monitor ticking away with slow steady beats. The sound should’ve been relieving in some way, but the more the sound rang in the brunette’s ears, the harder it was to hold back more tears.[break][break]

“How could we let this happen…”[break][break]
She knew she wasn’t alone in the room but the question was directed moreso at herself, voice wavering with the emotions threatening to spill from her. “What if they don’t wake up…? What...What will we do…?”

The world was wrong. Soldiers fall in war daily. Ask and she could pull up casualty lists of the last centuries worth of wars. Names, statistics, gender, age, everything that made a person. She thought that was enough to understand war. She doesn't. She won't. She wants to. She hates it. Indifference. The truth of it all was indifference, she couldn't feel the things that require experiencing anything else. It's what everyone told her before she was assigned to S.E.E.S. She would have to keep quiet during times of loss because her functions couldn't process emotion right. Stay silent. Motor functions shut off near the mouth. Vocal synthesizers shut off. The machines around the broken woman click, beep, hum softly as background music. Like a song of the dearly departed. It was amidst the chorus that Yukari broke rhythm. Arrhythmic interruption as if to mimic the beat of their leader's heart. How? What? Common questions asked amidst loss. Nobody wanted answers, just to mourn and be acknowledged in it. Yet she didn't comprehend. She was designed to assist. Even amidst this. Click, tick, soft whirring of mechanisms returning to life. Mouth opening, vocals producing audio for rendering. "Training proves our actions within proper percentile. Sporadic and abnormal reactions not commonly studied resulted in unforseen circumstance. There is no blame. However, a human body is quite frail, Yukari-San. Little can be done about that fact."[break][break]
Monotone language dripped in inhuman speech patterns. Anomalies. She spoke as designed, as any anti shadow weapon would, yet malfunctions ran through core systems controlling motor functions. Fingers tapping leg in rhythm to the heartbeat echoing silent room. She was trying to match it up. To make pattern is to ensure regular heartbeat. Survival chances increase tremendously when things regularize. Tap, tap, miss the beat, tap. Tap, miss beat, tap tap. Tap, tap, tap. Error, pattern not found. Failure rang through metal. Voice quiet, yet unfeeling all the same. "I should have accepted damage and absorbed attack. This body being destroyed is within calculation of risk."

At first Yukari couldn’t even actually formulate a response to the cyborg; had she expected Aegis to answer her question? Not really. All Yukari wanted, more than anything else, was for their fearless leader to jump out of her bed and reassure all of them that she was okay. But the last words from the doctor made that seem more like a pipe dream than anything else. [break][break]
Sitting here like this...Yukari felt so helpless.[break][break]
Why hadn’t she heeded Fuuka’s warning sooner? Had she acted, or pushed Minako out of the way, or done practically anything then maybe she’d be the one stuck in such a state instead. The thought brought painful tears to her eyes, hand clenching into a fist to keep them at bay. She’d already cried too much, and what good would more tears do?[break][break]
Suddenly she was up and out of her chair, facing the blonde with her lips pressed into a firm line.[break][break]
“What good would that have done, Aegis? You know Minako would’ve been devastated if you got hurt in her place…”[break][break]
The brunette knew all too well how true that was; Minako wasn’t the type who’d let anyone be hurt if she could help it. Yukari had witnessed it time and time again. Their leader was...incredibly stubborn in that regard. Aegis taking the brunt of the damage would’ve just hurt her in a deeper way, and they likely both knew it.[break][break]
“We did...all that we could…” Did she really believe that? No. But she was trying so hard to convince herself of that. Minako was strong, and she would pull through this. She had to.[break][break]

Defiant fire lit up in her eyes as they finally landed on Aegis, the tone in which the cyborg spoke sitting wrong inside of her. It wasn’t Aegis’ fault she was designed to be void of emotion or sympathy, but that wasn’t Yukari’s problem, either. All she knew was that her emotions were raw and the only outlet was standing before her.[break][break]

Sorrow turned to anger, may turn back or turn to hatred. This is fine. She can accept lashing out directed at her, it made no difference to anything. "I am programmed to eliminate shadow activity and assist members of S.E.E.S upon times of crisis. Analysis shows best ways to instigate agitated behavior and instantaneous simulations proved following belief to lead to greatest outrage. But she herself knew the honest answer. Her memory could be wiped, mission ripped from archives, everything making her sentient destroyed forever and Aegis would still protect Minako with her life. Not a mission but dedication. Not force bit desire to save their Leader from anything vile this world has to attack her with. Devotion burns circuits with their intensity. But she knows what Yukari wants, and this isn't it. [break][break] Head tilted to side, blank stare digging into the Lovers arcana. As if a doll was being made to look up at her. "More over. My body is estimated to be destroyed by all of development. Needless risk is ill advised unless anti shadow weapon Aegis is rendered completely useless. If you would like to voice opinion I can carry it to support members for input." Rile, rile. Push every fact of her life into the woman before her, set her off into an explosion to get out everything she feels. Speculation supports Aegis being able to brunt it without trouble.

It seemed Aegis knew exactly what buttons to push to get the reaction she wanted out of Yukari; damn that cyborg and her intelligence. Her cheeks burned bright from anger, her statement cut off as she stared at the blonde. Just what was her angle? Did she really want to make her lash out that badly? [break][break]
That answer should’ve been obvious but in this state Yukari seemed to look right past that; Aegis was trying to make this seem like it was her sworn duty to be killed for the cause of the mission, not because the well being of their leader meant that much to her. That in itself infuriated her to no end. [break][break]
“Why won’t you just be honest about it?” Her voice shook, hands clenched so hard at her sides that her knuckles began to turn white. “Robot or not, you have some semblance of emotion in there. This isn’t just about fulfilling the mission, Aegis; you care. You care so much but putting it into words or actions that you can actually understand is difficult. Trust me, I get it.” [break][break]
It was ironic that the two of them were the ones left waiting at Minako’s bedside; Yukari, who felt far too much and had absolutely no clue how to deal with it, and Aegis, who felt but didn’t understand how to accept it. Had it not been such a traumatic situation for the two of them right then, she might’ve even laughed. But not this time. [break][break]
Stepping forward slowly she faced the blonde head on, tears trickling down her cheeks making her feel far too weak in this moment. That’s all she seemed to be feeling lately; weak and helpless, just like she’d been when her father passed. [break][break]
“You feel more than you let on, and you need to express it. Just putting it bluntly as if it’s ‘just part of the mission’? That’s bullshit, if you ask me.”

Yukari could almost feel the doubt in those words, the anxiety creeping in where the cyborg tried her best to sound nonchalant. Maybe if the brunette wasn’t used to feeling too damn much she could’ve fooled her. But in this state, and the way she did her best to avoid meeting her gaze told Yukari all she needed to know; Aegis may have been having trouble comprehending it, but she was feeling, much more than she let on anyway. This was only made clearer when she’d moved back to Minako’s side, and Yukari wasn’t far behind her. Her gaze scanned over the lifeless body of their leader, and she was struck with the pain and guilt all over again; how many times had she wondered the same thing the Aeon just spoke aloud? Far too many times. So many, trying to count them almost made her laugh. Feeling was like a double edged sword. It was either euphoric and all encompassing or tragic and heart-breaking. For as long as Yukari had lived, she had known this. [break][break]
“I think...it’s because it’s part of what actually makes us human.”[break][break]
She moved to stand on the other side of Minako’s bed, a hand reaching out to gently rest atop the other’s. “These feelings...they’re a part of us. We laugh, we cry, we love, we lose...It’s a vicious cycle, but it’s part of who we are.” [break][break]
She happened to glance over at the blonde then, and even if the emotion wasn’t clear on her face Yukari could hear it in her voice; what kind of creators would give her the ability to feel but not to understand it? That in her book was cruel. But then again...did she even truly understand her own feelings? [break][break]
